openVFR Buildings now available

The team of openVFR has now finished the development a new scenery series for placing buildings taken from OpenStreetmap to Microsoft Flightsimulator X. The new scenery packages named 'openVFR Buildings' will add thousands of generic autogen buildings to your flightsim. This will improove the flight experience dramatically as these houses will be placed in 3D at their real world positions.

"By adding buildings at their real world positions on top of our existing sceneries you can really fly over realistic and fascinating landscapes. We recommend to install also 'openVFR Terrain' in order to improove topographical information like roads, railways, river, lakes, coastlines, forest, etc. You could even add more special objects like power generators, towers, stadions by installing 'openVFR Objects'. Together with 'openVFR Mesh' (our scenery to improove the shape of hills and mountains) the user now has a huge choice to select the level of detail for each country according to his computer performance.", so M. Freyt from openVFR "But openVFR Buildings can be also used standalone with other vector sceneries or even on top of any other external photosceneries. This is all in all very flexible for the user."

For now the following sceneries are available for download at www.openVFR.de:

openVFR launches some more North American States

The openVFR team has again published a bunch of new sceneries for their worldwide Addon Series for Microsoft Flightsimulator X. The openVFR Scenery Addons are based on data from Openstreetmap. The newest releases are launched just several days ago and include the North American states Alberta, Minnesota, Vermont, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana and New Mexico.

Explore the wilderness of the Rockies in southeast of Alberta and enjoy to the beauty of the northern forests. The two largest cities, Calgary and Edmonton, have international airports where you can start your flying tours. In Minnesota, known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes", you can expect thousands of lakes, rivers and streams, fertile farmlands, scenic southern hills and rocky northland.

openVFR North America, Minnesota (2012/05)

Placed in East of the United States Vermont has a wonderful variety of landscapes, too. The central and southern Green Mountain range include the oldest rocks in this region. Lake Champlain, the major lake in Vermont, is one of the largest body of fresh water in the United States.

openVFR North America, Vermont (2012/05)

With Lake Erie to the north, the Ohio River to the south, and hundreds of beautiful lakes and rivers in between, Ohio is perfect for VFR flying. The terrain is generally flat in the northwestern parts, but when flying to east or southeast it gets hillier because of the Allegheny and Appalachian mountain ranges. Follow those green hills to Kentucky where you can overfly some of the largest lakes east of the Missisippi.

openVFR North America, Ohio (2012/05)

openVFR North America, Kentucky (2012/05)

Take a trip along the mighty Mississippi and travel through Tennessee. There are some great major airports in this state like Memphis International Airport, Nashville International Airport. From here you could also fly over the mountains and lakes of North/Central Alabama. When flying further to the south you'll finally arrive at the white sand beaches at the Gulf Coast of Alabama. A bit more to the west, in Louisiana, you'll notice again the river Mississippi. Here the river flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Therefore the region is characterized by swampland, but in the north the region also consists of woodlands and hills.

openVFR North America, Tennessee (2012/05)

In New Mexico a few hours of flying can take you from red rock desert to alpine forests, or from flat grassland to sand dunes. The elevation drops off as you move to Albuquerque, the central part of the state, where the only major airport is located.

openVFR North America, New Mexico (2012/05)

If you would like to see some visual impressions of all openVFR sceneries you can find many screens taken from Microsoft Flightsimulator X at www.openvfr.de/facebook. Learn more about openVFR for Microsoft FSX at http://www.openVFR.de.

openVFR is a VFR scenery for the Microsoft Flightsimulator X (FSX) based on data taken from OpenStreetMap (OSM).

We are very happy that we can add more and more countries to our openVFR project. Right now we have launched more than 100 sceneries, some covering very unusal places for flightsimmers. We are very thankful to the flight community suggesting these interesting areas. F.e. we never thought about developing a scenery for Guyana before, but if we finally flew there, we were really suprised about its beauty. Pls, continue sending us your proposals. We love it!

new openVFR version for Italy

Last week we finished the development of some new Scenery AddOns for Microsoft Flightsimulator X. After the new release of openVFR Germany now you can download the new openVFR versions for Italy and some other holiday destinations too. They have been created by use of some new complex rendering algorithms we developed to get the most out of the actual snapshot from Openstreetmap.

openVFR Europe Italy, Sardina & Malta

Italy is one of the most beautiful holiday destination in Europe with approx 130 airports. It covers a surface area of 300,000 square km and includes the islands of Sardinia and Sicily. Discovering Italy can be an unforgettable experience. Explore this beautiful country by flying in mountainous areas in the north, the highest point being Mont Blanc, and areas with significant volcanic activity in the south like Etna, along with the famous Vesuvius.

openVFR Europe, Italy (EU_IT) 2012/04

openVFR Europe Portugal, Isla Madeira

If you are an experienced flightsimmer you'll surely know the airport of Madeira, informally known as Funchal Airport. Surrounded by high mountains and the ocean it is a tricky landing for even experienced pilots. The isle itself offers beautiful countryside. openVFR will give you a terrain rich of details, various 3D objects and a 90m mesh of this island. As openVFR is not focussed on creating airports we don't intent to update them.

Europe, Portugal – Madeira (EU_PT_M) 2012/03

openVFR Europe Spain, Islas de Canarias

Located around 100 kilometers off the northwestern coast of Africa Spain's paradisaical Islas Canarias (Canary Islands) consists of a handful of smaller islands and seven large islands: El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Explore the vast sandy beaches and coves, fascinating reefs, plunging cliffs and soaring mountain peaks with funky rock formations, craters and volcanic tubes.

openVFR North America, Isla Saint Pierre and Miquelon

St Pierre and Miquelon is a small group of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean, south of Newfoundland and Labrador. We found them actually by accident when creating our openVFR scenery for Newfoundland. Fascinated by the calm beauty of these Islands we decided to fullfill the East Canadian area in openVFR.

As usual a landclass scenery, a scenery for placing additional 3d objects and also a mesh is now available for each country. You can find several screen shots at the openVFR facebook page. Please, visit: www.openVFR.de/facebook

We are very happy that we can add more and more countries to our openVFR project. Right now we have launched nearly 100 sceneries, some covering very unusal places for flightsimmers. We are very thankful to the flight community suggesting these interesting areas. F.e. we never thought about developing a scenery for Guyana before, but if we finally flew there, we were really suprised about its beauty. Pls, continue sending us your proposals. We love it!

For early next year we plan to launch some places in Canada, which have been requested in the past very often. We were faced with so many unsuccessful experiments in the last weeks. And so far we were not statisfied with our quality of creating inland water bodies. The water system of lakes, rivers and streams is very complex in most of the Canadian states. But we are sure, that we can show some outstanding preview screens in the very next future.

openVFR releases new VFR sceneries for Microsoft FSX covering areas of Europe, Asia & South America

We are happy to publish new versions of our FSX sceneries for some favor European countries. After the new version of openVFR Germany an updated version covering Austria, Switzerland and also Bulgaria and Cyprus are available for download now. Compared to the older versions the newly created sceneries are based on actual data of Openstreetmap and a new internal rendering technology, which gives much more detailed impression of the generated landscapes. Furthermore the region of Moldova has been added as a new scenery for flying VFR with Microsoft FSX. As usual you can find a landclass package (openVFR Terrain), additional 3D objects (openVFR Objects) and also a precise elevation mesh with a resolution of 75m (openVFR Mesh) in the download area.

openVFR Europe, Austria (2011/10)
openVFR Europe, Switzerland (2011/10)
openVFR Europe, Bulgaria (2011/10)
openVFR Europe, Cyprus (2011/10)
openVFR Europe, Moldova (2011/10)

Also we have continued flying VFR in foreign parts of the world. Following some user suggestions we have now developed some more FSX sceneries for Asia. "It was a pleasure for us to fly around in such wonderful landscapes. Thank you for your area requests." M. Freyt, the developer of openVFR, states "We really can suggest you to try flying VFR in those amazing regions by yourself."

openVFR Asia, Vietnam (2011/10)
openVFR Asia, Taiwan (2011/10)

For South America we have finally added the longawaited meshes for Brazil & Colombia. As usual the openVFR Meshes are improoving the standard elevation profile of the FSX very much. But, be warned: The download package of the Brazilian mesh is nearly 1 GB devided in 3 parts!

openVFR South America, Brazil (2011/04)
openVFR South America, Colombia (2011/04)

While testing with the above updates, we found some minor problems with some 3D objects near to the border of a country. These objects were placed twice in case of using both sceneries of one border. For those, who have already downloaded the 3D objects for Germany, Slovenia and Croatia (version 2011 only) can find relevant patches for free in the login area.

openVFR goes worldwide?

Last weeks we have finished the development of the long-awaited, improved version of the scenery covering Germany based on our new rendering technology we used also for our American ones. We hope you will enjoy a much better presentation of water, isles and buliding areas and also improved freeway traffic.

One of the most exciting features of openVFR is, that our flightsimulator scenery is not based on static data. As is build upon data of Opentreetmap everyone could improove its data source by simply editing the area of interest. On our openVFR website you can finally request us to develop an update for this specific region.

After the first exciting results with openVFR Africa we have decided to continue the development of some more interesting sceneries containing parts of Africa. Following the user requests of our flightsim community we have already prepared openVFR sceneries covering Ghana, Republic of Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Egypt. They are now ready to be downloaded.

Furthermore we also have published some more areas of North and South America:
South America - Chile, Columbia
North America - Costa Rica, Panama, Greenland, Newfoundland & Labrador

Finally we are also happy to present the first openVFR sceneries covering some areas in Asia and Oceania:
Asia - Philippines
Oceania - French Polynesia

All in all this development cycle will add the following sceneries:

openVFR publishes the first african countries as scenery for Microsoft Flightsimulator X: South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania & Madagascar. Also openVFR is very pleased to add some new countries for the scenery openVFR America. Following the proposals of our users we launch countries like Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia and the Falkland Isles. Additionally openVFR publishes two missing countries for openVFR Europe: Croatia and Slovenia, which have really nice mountain areas!

You can comment some first screens on the openVFR Facebook page:
www.openVFR.freyt.de/facebook/

openVFR publishes the first african countries as scenery for Microsoft Flightsimulator X: South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania & Madagascar. Like all sceneries of openVFR there are different packages (terrain, objects and a mesh) available for each country. Also the new african sceneries are based on Openstreetmap and elevation data from NASA, re-worked CGIAR Consortium for Spatial Information.

"As we started our project we never thought, that we would finally create such a global scenery with countries from around the world.", Markus Freyt states. "As you might know, there are not too much FSX sceneries for Africa available. Therefore we thought that we just could give it a try if the data of Openstreetmap would be ready to create also a scenery for this continent. Well, we are really very fascinated that even for such foreign countries Openstreetmap has collected such brilliant data. So, we are looking forward to the future and what will happen next with openVFR."

openVFR North America II now launched!

Lately we have published some more countries to their FSX scenery for North America. The following US states have been launched: Alaska, California, Delaware, El Salvador, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Also Venezueal (in South America) is now ready for download.

You can comment some first screens on the openVFR Facebook page:
www.openVFR.freyt.de/facebook/

For the first time also a South American country, Venezuela, has been published as well. It has been developed, following several requests from the flight sim community. "After the release of openVFR North America we got a lot of encouraging feedback from the flight sim community to continue our development and add even more countries. Many thanks for your comments. Also we are very happy to see that our new free tool for requesting specific areas for the development cycle is used such frequently.", Markus Freyt states. "Fortunately Openstreetmap covers the whole planet with fantastic data for every place. So, when selecting the new countries we have listened to those flight simmers."

If you wish a specific country to be developed, please send your free request at: http://openvfr.freyt.de/magento/index.php/missing_country
